Following on the heels of the USS Long Island (CVE-1, originally AVG-1), appeared the four Sangamon-class escort carriers with the USS Santee (CVE-29) shown here. The letter suffix designation code ‘CVE’ stood for escort aircraft carrier and was applied in July 1943. Of all the CVEs commissioned by the US navy, the Sangamon class was the largest model built and the only class to operate dive-bombers during the Second World War. (RWP)

In the same general mould as the USS Long Island was the USS Charger (CVE-30), shown here in May 1942. The carrier was the sole ship in its class and never saw combat: rather, it was employed throughout the Second World War as a training ship by the US navy. Despite its wartime training role, it was armed with a number of anti-aircraft guns. (RWP)
