No one there has relatives so they consider the staff as family and are well taken care of by them. She says the key to her long life is this personal attention. When she has an illness she stays in the sickroom and is well cared for . . . She's not afraid of getting old or dying.

Mr. Wang Chunshan—Age 70

The first day after my birth, I began what became a bitter life, I was born into a peasant family—farmers—and we were very poor. When I was young, my mother often took me outside as a beggar. There were 40 in our family. My father had five brothers. My grandfather and grandmother were also farmers and worked for the landlord. Living conditions were very bad, miserable. When my grandfathers and uncles were still alive, their lives were like that of the horse and cow—no food to eat or clothes to wear.

When I was 18, I left my family and joined the army—the Anti-Japanese Red Army in the Northeast. My first commander was killed by the Kuomintang. I joined a unit led by Yang Ching-yu but he was killed by the Japanese army in 1940. After the Japanese surrendered, I joined the Eighth Route Army and in the Black Mountain Battle I was wounded six times, four times seriously and twice minor. My stomach was shot full of holes. My intestines fell out of my stomach. My ribs were broken. I was treated in a hospital and when I recovered I went back to the countryside. After twenty years service in the army, I retired. Because I didn't get an education the only work I could do was farm in the countryside.
