I make a decree that in every dominion of my kingdom men must tremble and fear before the God of Daniel. For He is the living God, steadfast forever; His kingdom is the one which shall not be destroyed, and His dominion shall endure to the end.[51]

Darius didn’t replace his two governors. Instead, he reinstalled Daniel as prime minister over all the satraps of the empire. Daniel served well throughout the reign of Darius and even into the reign of Cyrus.

THE SCRIPTURE BEHIND THE STORY

As of this writing, attorney-politician James A. Baker III is eighty-five years old. For more than forty of those years, he has had a hand in politics in Washington, DC. Many so-called “career politicians” could be named, but there are few with careers as unique as Baker’s. Although he’d be content to work as an attorney in Houston, he has continually been called into the corridors of power in Washington as an appointed counselor to presidents—from one administration to the next.

Baker first became involved in politics serving in the election campaigns of Richard Nixon and George H. W. Bush. When Gerald Ford succeeded Richard Nixon as president, Baker became the undersecretary of commerce, and later he became the White House chief of staff for President Reagan. Reagan then named Baker secretary of the treasury, and he became chairman of Reagan’s successful reelection campaign. Baker also served on the Economic Policy Council and the National Security Council. When George H. W. Bush came into office, he named Baker secretary of state and chief of staff.

After his presidential roles, Baker served the UN secretary-general Kofi Annan as a diplomatic envoy, headed up George W. Bush’s legal team during the infamous voter recounts in Florida, and served as a consultant to Congress and the Bush White House on Iraq. Along with former president Jimmy Carter, he cochaired the Federal Commission on Election Reform, was cochair of the National War Powers Commission, and is currently honorary cochair of the World Justice Project. The list of appointments and awards could go on and on.

Are you seeing a pattern here? Sometimes a person has political and relational skills that make him highly sought after by those in power. The task doesn’t seem to matter: treasury, commerce, political strategy, international envoy, consensus building. The skill set includes whatever is needed to keep the machinery of politics moving forward.

My point is not to set a certain person on a pedestal but to give contemporary context to something we observe in the life of Daniel. As a conquered captive who never sought to advance his own agenda, Daniel was continually invited into places of power. In his case, these opportunities were the result of God’s blessing on Daniel for his faithfulness and obedience. Even when one administration (the Babylonian Empire) gave way to another (the Medo-Persian Empire), Daniel was a constant; he was consistently sought out by various rulers to play a critical role.

At the end of Daniel 5, we saw the fall of Babylon and the rise of Darius the Mede (Daniel 5:30-31).
