Chapter 8

Linc

My heart had dropped out of my chest when I’d arrived at the outpost to find Dutch and some of the others standing over Jessica’s bloody body.

I’m not even sure I put the truck into park or turned it off.

What she meant to me flashed before my eyes as I ran toward her.

Those stolen moments when I’d surprised her on inspection, and we’d made out like teenagers. How much I depended on her and knew she would be there when the world ended. She was supposed to be standing by my side, not lying on a makeshift table, bleeding to death.

“Linc, we did everything we could to get her here. We cleaned it and got the bleeding to stop for the most part, but that doesn’t mean she won’t change at some point.” Dutch gripped my shoulder in sympathy. “Not much else we can do right now except make her comfortable.”

“Ah!” I screamed in rage as it hit home that I was going to lose her. “How did it happen? Wasn’t anyone watching her?”

Martha stepped forward. “We were taking out that horde by using the dozers and farm equipment so they would be more manageable. Kevin had given us a short window to take a break and get something to drink. She was helping each group finish up and get away before the next group came up.”

“There wasn’t any way we could have seen this coming. All the others were already back, and she should have been right behind us, but some of the stragglers from the woods came up from the back. We were too far away to get to her.” Kevin’s head hung in shame, as he if he was waiting for me to punch him.

Not that I didn’t want to, but it wasn’t going to solve anything. She had already been bitten, and we had to find some way to save her.

I’d completely forgotten the group I had been meeting with when they pulled up behind my truck.

Patti jumped out and took control, seeing I was beyond wanting to issue orders or solving problems.

“Are there still ZITs coming in this direction?”

“Y–Yes,” Dutch stammered. “Most of the others were making sure the stragglers were put down.”

“Wonderful.” Patti motioned to those in the back of the trucks to get out. “Tom, take a few of the guys and help keep them going. All these people standing here waiting for her to die isn’t going to help. She started something, so let’s make sure it gets finished.”

She turned toward me and grimaced. “There’s a doctor who’s just arrived with the new group of people. He might have something that can help. You should take her over and see if there’s something they can do.”

My ears perked up at her words.

“She’s right. Even if Jessica doesn’t make it, they can give her something to ease her pain.” I looked around at all the concerned faces. “Patti’s got this. She’s been fighting these things in Nashville since it started. Follow her directions, and we might not lose anyone else.
