The khan vented his anger on those who were left behind. He disposed of the sultanâs harem and treasures and tossed Jalaluddinâs eldest son, a lad of eight years, and his brothers into the Indus to drown. Mongol generals crossed the river and pursued the fugitive prince but failed to capture him. Jalaluddin disappeared on the far bank and headed for Delhi. Being unable to obtain help from Sultan Iltutmish, of the Mamluk dynasty of Delhi, Jalaluddin stayed in India for a few years before making his way back to western Persia. Although Jalaluddin again raised an army and reestablished his kingdom, he failed to consolidate power. He spent the rest of his life fighting Mongols, pretenders to the throne, and the Seljuqs of Rum until he was finally defeated by the Mongols and then killed by a Kurdish assassin hired by the Seljuqs in Diyarbakir in 1231.
After the Indus battle, Chinggis Khan marched up the right bank of the Indus and camped in the Peshawar plain during the winter of 1222. He sent a detachment to take Multan but failed to capture it. More columns raided other valleys, chasing Jalaluddinâs allies in the region. Amin Malik was finally caught and executed. Jawzjani reported that Chinggis Khan wished to take a shortcut to China and reconquer the Tangut Empire in that northwestern Chinese province. But Sultan Iltutmish of Delhi refused to cooperate, and the terrain and severe climate frustrated the plan.66 Renewed resistance in Afghanistan forced the Mongol Khan to return west, and in the early spring of 1222 he set up camp in Kabul, from where he launched a new campaign to subdue resurgent native forces in Afghanistan.
