CHAPTER ELEVEN

Def Jam’s Bad Boy

After spending six months on house arrest with everybody running around hollering about FREE BIG MEECH, Big Meech was finally free.

One day he hit me up out the blue. “Yo, we’re going to Cancun.”

I was like, “Who’s going to Cancun, Meech?”

“We,” he said, like that explained it.

“Man, who’s we?”

“We, man, we! Everybody. Call everybody you know. I’m calling everybody I know. I’m getting a plane.”

That was too much for me. “What you mean you’re getting a plane?”

With his music blaring in the background, he was like, “What you mean, what do I mean? A plane, homie. A plane. And I’m not talking about no little G5 neither. I’m talking about a 747 or some shit, like those joints Delta flies. Depends on how many people we can get. Make some calls and let me know.”

Sure enough, Big Meech chartered a big-ass plane and he flew everybody to Cancun. And I’m talking everybody. There must have been two hundred people on board, but it felt like the whole city was there. It was Lil Jon, Bone Crusher, Juvenile, me, damn near every stripper in Atlanta, plus J-Bo, O-Dog, and the whole crew. Meech had the flight attendants pouring Cristal the whole flight, and he kept dancing in the aisle and running up on the pilots in the cockpit talking about, “Yo, let me fly! Let me fly! I paid for this motherfucker—let me fly the plane!”

I remember the pilots hopped on the PA system, like, “Ladies and gentlemen, if you don’t take your seats, we’ll be forced to turn around and return to America.”

It was wild. We did make it to Mexico, though. And we had a ball.

From the moment we touched down, Meech paid for everything. He bought out a hotel right on the beach and put everybody up, chartered boats, rented Jet Skis. I remember at one point, O-Dog was zipping off through the waves talking about, “I’m going to Cuba!” It was that type of trip.

Every night we’d all link up and mob over to this club called The City, rolling two hundred deep. That was the first time I’d ever been to a DJ S&S party, and I swear he played Fat Joe’s “Lean Back” so many times. The song had just come out, and he’d play it a hundred times, and then throw something else on real quick like Usher’s “Confessions” just to mess with the crowd, and then he’d be right back on “Lean Back.” I’d never heard anybody break a record like that, but it worked, and “Lean Back” became the theme song of the whole trip.

That’s honestly one of the best trips I’ve ever been on, and I wrote “That’s How Ya Feel” on the plane ride home.

***

Meech and J-Bo were two of my biggest fans early on, and Meech was always a big believer in my music. Whenever we’d be out, he was always calling people over to introduce them to me.

It didn’t matter where we were—Justin’s, Magic
