Mindfulness and Attention

I t’s a bit of a no-brainer. If you aren’t paying attention you are not going to take anything in, let alone remember it.

How we interact with the world is a very important part of a good memory process.

I recall when I used to be a high-powered business executive—managing a team of people and always on the go. Added to that I was a single parent and running a household with two small boys to raise.

I always felt like I was running from pillar to post.

I never felt like I could give anything my full attention, and as a result nothing really got done as well as it could have been. I felt like I wasn’t good at any of it, and while that wasn’t entirely correct, I was definitely letting my stress and responsibilities pull me every which way. It certainly wasn’t the best way to be productive or of best use.

Eventually I became chronically stressed, on high blood pressure medications, and even had an angina attack.

I had to shelve my management studies and anything that wasn’t vital for survival, for a while. Growth and learning were not a priority.

I was extremely absentminded—even worse than normal. I put it all down to the immense amount of stress I was under, and the way with which I had decided to live my life. Always rushing, always busy—even watching the TV, I would be reading a book and flicking through my phone. I never paid anything full attention and had got out of the habit of paying attention.

So I paid in other ways. I paid with my health, my peace of mind, my relationships, and my business in the end.

Luckily, I had some friends who introduced me to mindfulness and meditation. The Brahma Khumaris taught me waking, open-eyed meditation. A retired monk taught me walking meditation. The Buddhists at various retreats I attended taught me Zen and chanting meditation. And after a while it all began to sink in.

Once I started to actually apply the practice to my daily life it almost became addictive—the immense sense of peace and calm that settled over my soul. Now, through consistent mindfulness and meditation practice I barely feel any stress, even in the most taxing situations. I am calm, collected, and can easily deal with difficult people, problems, and challenges. I am able to focus, and this has increased my learning, experience, and enjoyment of life. If you take nothing else out of this book—perhaps take the learning from this chapter, as it will change your life.

Your Attention Decides Your Memory

If you take five people who have all witnessed the same car crash, and ask them to independently describe what happened you will get five quite different stories. This is not because they are trying to deceive you, but rather how they paid attention, and what they paid attention to, plus how they interpreted that information, will be different for each person .

First of all—we see events through a filter. This filter is made up of all our previous experiences.
