ABUNDANT ADJECTIVES and VERBS ALIVE!

Level: For all levels (enrichment and incentive: for language-based material)

Purpose: Some students do not develop extensive vocabularies and tend to use the same words over and over. This exercise is designed to help all students add words to their active vocabularies as well as to understand that synonyms may not convey exactly the same meaning—the difference between connotation and denotation. While the directions are designed for adjectives and verbs, you can easily develop similar exercises for other parts of speech.

Time: From 10 to 30 minutes, depending on how much you want the students to get from the exercise. Also suitable for homework.

Materials:

• List of vocabulary words, which can be developed from the material that is being read in class or from other sources.

• Students should have access to a dictionary, a thesaurus, a computer with a thesaurus, or other lists of synonyms and antonyms.

Procedure:

Part 1: Each student or pair of students selects one word from a list of vocabulary words. The students then use a dictionary, thesaurus, or any other source to develop a list of synonyms for the word they have selected. They then make up a simple sentence in which that word appears. Those lists and sentences are then handed in to the teacher.

Part 2: Display one of the sentences, and ask the class to come up with synonyms for the indicated word without using any sources. Use each synonym in the original sentence, discussing how the meaning of the sentence has changed from the original.
