Go back to the stressor list I prompted you to create earlier in this chapter. Remember as you make your list to include even those items that stress you out only a little; even they can add to your cortisol load and lead to a major stressful blowout.

Think about how much “stress juice” you are allowing each item on the list. If something doesn’t deserve the intensity you’ve been giving it, notice the mismatch. Just the awareness that you’re stressing about something more than it deserves can help reframe your view.

Feeling stressed out is akin to feeling out of control. If you’re feeling inordinately stressed out, consider rereading chapter 4 .

When you feel yourself getting stressed out and have determined that the stress is worth expending, tell yourself, “This is supposed to be hard. I actually get better working this hard.”

Note when you are learning from the edginess of stress. That means you’re framing stress appropriately. Also note when you begin to break apart from too much stress. That’s when it’s time to take a break.

Realize that you can have too much of anything, including positive stress.
