To make a rough estimate of the Sun’s direction at sunset and sunrise, hold a compass at the place or places where you watched the Sun rise and set. Be sure to hold the compass away from metals such as a belt buckle. If it is working properly, the compass needle will point in a northerly direction, but it is not likely to point to true north. That is, it probably will not point toward the North Pole. The North Pole is almost directly beneath the North Star. In what general direction did the Sun rise? In what general direction did the Sun set?
