Chapter 11
Theo could not believe the mouth on his little Gia. Had she no manners, or filter to keep from speaking so boldly? Certain words floated through his mind, but he knew better than to say them aloud, and worse, her nanny had been just a few steps away, ready on a whim to spank the sense right back into her.
He had restrained himself from spanking her for doing as he asked: being honest. Her confidence, however, had been misdirected into using language inappropriate and vulgar for either a lady or a little. Theo did not dare imagine the response on the street upon hearing such talk. The scandal that would follow, and people assuming she was a harlot with a mouth that needed to be filled with soap!
As Nanny Vivian escorted little Gia to her playroom, he watched them walk, stepping out into the corridor. The long hall felt as though it stretched on and on, and the noise and chatter echoing off the walls made it appear far louder than usual. He wanted to speak with Mr. Hartley now more than ever, to discover where his gem Gia had been found. What was her upbringing and background? She had mentioned her parents being deceased. When had they perished? There were questions he wanted to ask Gia, but did not always find it appropriate considering the setting. She was to be little, and any amount of time with her as an adult would slow the regression process—which was not his intention—so he thought it best to ask the person who had hired Miss Hayes as a nanny himself.
Little Gia stopped at the entrance to the playroom and glanced behind her shoulder at him. It made his heart swell that she cared enough to think of him. He was still getting to know her, but he felt swept up in her world as a little, wanting to please her in return, and make himself happy in the process.
His faint nod was all she needed to smile before her nanny's hands on her shoulders guided her into the playroom.
Theo headed down the hall and knocked on Mr. Hartley's door. Was he in his office, or busy keeping the school from running wild? How did he manage to run both a finishing school and an institute for littles? It seemed like an awful lot of work, but the place looked pleasant and clean, and the girls were all kept in line.
"Come in," Philip said from behind the closed door.
Theo turned the handle and stepped into the room before shutting the door behind him. "Sorry for interrupting you, Mr. Hartley, I am sure you are busy."
"There is always work to be done. Do you not find that to be the case as well, Theo?" Philip asked.
He was quite correct. Work never seemed to lighten up, and though Theo had taken a few days off to follow his fantasies about finding his own little one, he would now be at the mercy of the Ashby visiting hours, likely on weekends.
