Transformations

A variation is to have students practice with “moveable” words, phrases, and clauses. They practice with five to ten sentences that have moveable parts (e.g., The sun went down before I arrived. Before I arrived, the sun went down; The solution will boil if you turn up the flame. If you turn up the flame, the solution will boil; Nevertheless, the event was very significant. The event was very significant, nevertheless.) After practicing the transformations, students write their own sentences and attempt to transform them. This also gives them practice in writing longer sentences with multiple clauses.
