Nadal loads his weight on his back leg before transferring it forward to add power to his overhead swing.

After turning and pivoting your feet, if the lob is deep in the court, your left foot should do a backward cross over step, finishing behind and to the right of the right foot. If the lob is shorter, your left foot will move backwards and almost meet your right foot.

Remember, the main danger on the overhead is not being able to reach the lob, and it is much easier to move forward into the swing than to back up at the last second. Therefore, make an aggressive backward first move; once the lob is nearing its apex, you will know better where the ball will come down and can adjust your footwork accordingly.

Following a strong first movement, begin skipping back sideways from the net in the serving stance. Your footwork should get you into a position that allows your hitting arm to be fully extended and in front of the body at contact. Like a bad ball toss on the serve, bad positioning on the overhead will lead to poor balance and stifled arm extension.

The most powerful overheads occur when you can firmly plant your back foot and push forward into the court (previous page). Unlike the serve, the legs should remain bent and grounded through contact to keep the body level and assist timing. On a short lob, your weight shifts from your back foot to your front foot as it steps forward, while on a deep lob you may need to use the “scissor kick” whereby your back foot plants and your front foot rotates backwards as you swing up at the ball (far right).
