Chapter Twenty-four

Since neither Hareem nor Cynthia knew the meaning of the word quickie, it was almost noon when they left the house so he could take her to work. Knowing his proclivity for sleeping with other women, having Hareem take her to work and pick her up every day was one of her means of controlling him. She had always known about his other women, even in the beginning. In fact, he had been sleeping with three women when she met him. Two she had run off personally, and the other had moved to Palatka.

Although it bothered her, Cynthia had resigned herself to Hareem’s dalliances. It really wasn’t so hard, since she saw other people too, although Hareem didn’t know it. She wasn’t ready to give up that part of herself or share it with Hareem. But somebody sending her images, that was another matter entirely. She couldn’t see the woman’s face in the image; it was taken from an angle that allowed her to see only the kimono and a bare shoulder, with Hareem asleep in the background. Cynthia would find out who had sent it and would shut her down if the issue persisted.

After Hareem dropped her at the office and drove away, he picked up his phone to call Loonie. Omeika had a doctor’s appointment that afternoon at one, and he had promised to take them. He unlocked his phone and saw that she had called twice in the past hour and had sent a text. Hareem dialed her number.

“About time you called me back,” Loonie said when she answered the call.

“I’m sorry. I was in the middle of something when you called.”

“I’m sure you were right in the middle of that skinny bitch’s thighs.”

“I was—” He started to make up an excuse, but Loonie cut him off before he could get it out.

“Don’t bother explaining. I just need to know if you’re coming or not. It doesn’t matter to me. I got a car, and I am more than happy to drive myself. You the one that said you wanted to be there.”

“I do wanna be there, and I am on my way right now.”

Loonie looked at her watch. “All right, Hareem, you need to be here at exactly twelve thirty, because at twelve thirty-one I’m in the car and I’m gone.”

“I’ll be there. I love you,” Hareem said and ended the call before Loonie could say anything.

She put the phone down and picked up Omeika. “We gonna see how this thing with your daddy goes.” She kissed her on the cheek. “But Mommy’s not gonna take but so much of his shit.”

All Loonie wanted was what was best for her and Omeika. She wouldn’t call what she felt for Hareem love, but she did have feelings for him, and he was her baby’s father. Loonie had gotten the results of the DNA test, and Hareem was indeed Omeika’s father. He at least deserved a chance to step up to the role. She was willing to try to go along with Hareem’s plan and see how it went.
