MELODY

Razvan and I got up to leave the tavern after a few more minutes of small talk and picking at our food. I looked around for Connor to tell him, but the place was getting so crowded that I lost sight of him.

He’ll know who I’m with. He practically forced me to talk to him, I figured.

Raz was quiet as we walked side-by-side to the Renaissance fair vendors near where I first saw him juggling those knives.

“That thing you did with fire,” I said, breaking our silence. “That’s part of your shifter abilities?”

“Yes,” he answered quietly but didn’t elaborate.

I let the information turn over in my head as we put more distance between us and the lights of the carnival.

“I don’t want to frighten you, steluţa,” he said as our steps slowed to a halt. “My shift is not an ordinary animal. So I’m going to do this in small steps.”

For the first time since I met him, he seemed insecure. Unsure of himself. He looked genuinely like he might have regretted bringing me out here.

“Okay,” I said, trying to give a reassuring smile.

His mouth only tensed. “Please don’t scream. It’ll attract attention.”

“I promise I won’t,” I answered. “Hunter— the wolf I met, told me how shifters have a high value and are exploited by carnivals. He said it was surprising that you’re still performing freely and willingly.”

“That is an entirely different story,” Raz said dryly. “But yes, if people see me and know who and what I am, I’ll be no better than a caged animal again. I’m essentially putting my freedom in your hands, Melody.”

“I understand,” I told him solemnly. “I won’t alert you to anyone. I promise.”

He still looked hesitant for a moment before nodding sharply.

“You might want to stand a few feet away,” he warned.

I backed away from him a few steps, my heart thrumming with anticipation.

Razvan nervously exhaled a deep breath. “This is how I was forced to perform when I was first captured.”

In the darkness, I didn’t see any changes. I didn’t even hear the sound of bones crunching and popping like when Hunter shifted. But when he stepped into the dim light casting through the trees, I barely recognized him.

His skin turned entirely black and was covered in a fine layer of what looked like scales. New bumps and ridges emerged on his skin like horns or spikes trying to poke through. His teeth grew a couple inches longer, poking past his lips and all were sharply pointed. And his eyes! Still steely grey but now with a slitted, reptilian pupil.

“Holy shit, Razvan,” I breathed, taking a step forward.

“Don’t come closer,” he warned, holding up a scaly hand with long black claws. His words still came out clearly but with a different pitch to his voice.

“You don’t look that different,” I said carefully, drinking in his new appearance with fascination. “Just… more modified.”

He nodded. “I was first advertised as a lizard-man. Just a regular guy with full-body scales tattooed, filed teeth, and some subdermal implants.
