The Veg at the heart of the garden

The vegetable garden at Brandywine Cottage is center stage. Its central location is a matter of design, but philosophically it seems right that the heart of the garden should be The Veg. Growing vegetables is a reminder of what came first when we began tilling the soil—food. It speaks clearly of nature’s abundance, and the relationship between nature and the gardener tending the earth. And it speaks directly to our agrarian roots, our own family history. I grew up with my grandparents’ much larger vegetable garden, in the Great Smoky Mountains. I worked alongside them, picking beans, peas, corn, lettuce, strawberries. As many berries went into my mouth as into the collection bucket, but they never seemed to mind. I also went out foraging for blackberries with my friends. I wonder how many kids today can do that? And I can still taste my grandmother’s blackberry cobbler, which was my reward. It was wonderful! These experiences gave me delightful memories, but more than that, they nurtured a love of plants that enhances every aspect of my life.
