THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Rejection, isolation, abuse—those things are lifealtering. They give us scars that never quite go away. But, although my scars are sometimes very visible, I want to remember the scars that really matter: those of my Savior. Those are the marks that represent victory over death. It was His suffering that saved me, and it’s my suffering that taught me more about Him. So I’m thankful for the wounds I experienced and happy to say He has healed them. And God picked a most otherworldly way to help me heal—by filling me with both the desire and the ability not only to forgive, but also to love, my enemies.

In what way have the actions of others overwhelmed your life?

Do you have any enemies? If so, how can you love them?

Are there people in your life that you are unwilling to forgive? If so, why?

If they asked you to forgive them today, could you? (Read Matthew 5:23-24 and Luke 17:3-4 to help you understand God’s view on this topic.)

While speaking to throngs of wounded and broken people on a mount by the Sea of Galilee, Jesus offered us the ability to be free from the bondage of past abuse by saying:

I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5:44-48)

This view into what a life filled with the Spirit of God can do is refreshing. It means victory over the past, and a new pattern of love and forgiveness in the future. If you are suffering from what someone has said or done to you, you do not have to approve of what they did in order to pray for them or forgive them. You only have to rest assured of God’s faithfulness and justice, and to trust that when you pray, you are set free—and that any power they had to overwhelm and control your life is gone.
