Even Lars’s beer tasted flat without Rael here to drink it with. He sighed. His hand hovered near the phone as he tried to decide whether calling Rochelle would be worth the ass-chewing he’d get just to hear a friendly voice. He would have called his mom, but she was off on a weekend reunion with the girls, and no way was he busting up a party of Valkyries with his man trouble. He could have been wrong, but he figured that sending a dozen large-breasted, armor-clad women after Rael probably wasn’t the best way to get his lover back.

Although, knowing Rael, he’d probably think the ravens were cute.

Damn it. This was crazy. Here he was assuming the worst with no proof whatsoever. Lars stood up and pulled off his shirt, figuring he’d take a shower. Maybe it’d clear his head a little.

Padding barefooted toward the bathroom, he noticed that the living room floor was kind of grainy. He bent down to check. Was that salt? “Hey, Kitty? Was Rael summoning demons here?”

The salamander mewled guiltily and scuttled out of the room. Lars’s jaw set. There was something going on here, and he was damn well going to find out what. He picked up the phone and hit speed dial. “Rochelle? Can you come on down here? I need you to do a spell for me.”

“Thornsson, if this is some kinky sex ritual you want to get up to with Hell Boy, I’m going to be telling you where to shove your damn grimoire, and there ain’t gonna be no frickin’ lube involved.”

Lars swallowed. “Rael’s not here. I think he may have summoned another demon.”

She cussed and slammed down the phone, arriving twenty minutes later with her witching gear in a duffel bag slung over one shoulder. Dumping it on the floor, she glared at Kitty, who’d started sniffing around hopefully. “If I catch you nibbling any of my candles, I’ll be toting a new salamander-skin handbag this fall.” Kitty glowed a little, but edged away from the bag. Rochelle grunted her approval, then turned to Lars. “Lemme get this straight, Thornsson. You want me to do an iterare spell so you can spy on your lover and check he ain’t off screwing some other demon? After all the shit you gave me a while back when I suggested the exact same thing?”

“Uh, pretty much.” It sounded a lot less reasonable and way more stalkerish when she said it like that. “I mean, I just want to make sure he hasn’t gotten into trouble—”

“Yeah, whatever. It’s cool. So where did you find the salt? I figure we’d better make our circle as wide as possible to make sure we hit your boy’s.” She lit her candles, using a compass to orient them north, south, east, and west, and started pouring salt in a wide circle that encompassed the sofa and the TV.

“Hey, C, aren’t you leaving my furniture kind of vulnerable to demonic attack here?”
