“Thanks again for giving me a ride and coming with me.” Glen pivoted in the buggy seat as Sammy held the reins. “And thanks for letting me borrow your clothes.” He glanced down at the suspenders and too-long trousers.

“You’re welcome. Anything for a friend.” Sammy slanted a glance in his direction.

“There was something else that’s been on my mind. I really don’t have anyone to talk to. Anyone I’m close enough to confide in.” Glen frowned. He sounded pathetic, but it was the truth. He hadn’t really made any close friends among the Englisch, and even if he had, he didn’t think he could ever share some of the things that had been on his mind. Not like he and Sammy had in the past.

“I don’t mind you talking to me.”

Glen inhaled and exhaled. “What I have to say is difficult.”

Sammy slowed the rig. “Say on.”

“What I wanted to say is, Sammy, you’re not the only one Miranda cheated on.” Glen hated uttering the words. He hated admitting that he had never been enough for his wife.

“What are you saying?” Sammy’s brow furrowed. “Did she see other men while you were married?”

Glen’s eyes burned. He didn’t want to relive those scenes again. Yet, the vision of seeing his wife enjoying a meal across the table from another man, and the looks and touches they’d shared, had been more than enough to convince him Miranda was having an affair. And then, when she’d left a message saying she wouldn’t be home that night… He’d been so angry at the time; he’d wanted to kill them both. “Yes, she did.”

“But you were married!” Jah, Sammy considered marriage sacred, as did he.

“I know.” Even now, an urge to throw something attempted to overtake him. “Apparently, when we took those vows, only one of us meant them.” He shrugged. “Honestly, I don’t think she really wanted to be married in the first place. She enjoyed being free from any restraints.”

“Did she tell you that?”

Glen nodded. “I never told you this, but when she first told me about the boppli, she was determined to get rid of it. She said she had a friend that went to a doctor and he…” Just thinking of the words was too painful. And to think that if Miranda had gone through with it, he wouldn’t have his daughter. “Anyway, I begged her not to. I told her that I would marry her and help her care for our baby. She reluctantly agreed.”

“Ach, I didn’t know that.”

“It wonders me if maybe the ‘friend’ she spoke of was herself.” He frowned.

“That wouldn’t have surprised me if she’d been in the familye way before. I’m embarrassed to have been one of the willing participants.” Sammy shook his head. “I wish I would have been wiser back then.”

“I think we were two of many, sad to say. She didn’t grow up in a Christian home.” Glen frowned. “And we weren’t the best examples of living right.”

“Do you really think Miranda would have had your boppli killed, though?”

“I don’t doubt it.
