RI.9–10.2. Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details, and provide a summary of the text. Students will read a biographical text such as Night by Elie Wiesel (1955/2006), The Autobiography of Malcolm X (1965/2001), or The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin (1791/1996) and describe how the author identifies a central idea to develop throughout the text.

Students will read Meditations on First Philosophy by Descartes (1641/1993). Students will identify a central idea that Descartes develops over the course of the text including detailed examples of how the author presents the central idea and how this central idea might help a young person think more clearly in the 21st century.

Alternate texts that could be used for a similar learning task include Plato’s (380 BC/2000) The Republic or Albert Camus’s (1942/2005) Myth of Sisyphus.

Students will write a persuasive essay in which they take a position that Descartes either “got it right” or “got it wrong” on his central idea. Students will develop the thesis with text evidence and well-reasoned argumentation.

Students will create an audio-visual presentation in which they briefly summarize the text and present the central idea that Descartes develops.
