Champsosaurs

Now we come to animals that are quite unknown today. When you see one of those you will probably mistake it for a little crocodile. They are only just getting going in Morrison times. They will come to their climax in the later Cretaceous and will even survive the extinction of the dinosaurs and live in the swamps of the early age of mammals.

Like crocodiles champsosaurs live in water. They have long streamlined bodies and flattened tails for swimming. Their snouts are long and narrow and packed with little teeth – ideal for catching fish. The later forms will be quite large, but those of the Morrison are quite small – no bigger than about 50 centimetres long. They probably feed on the tiny fish of the flood plain lakes or even on the multitude of insects that congregate there.
