Chapter 9
NESTING AND PORN
October 26, 2016
Moving day. We had stumbled upon a newly built complex of townhouses for rent. They were pricey, even more expensive than my mortgage, but Milos would have a job by the end of January. With my house selling, I had a small surplus of cash that should keep us comfortable until then.
It was three bedrooms, with a two-car garage, so thankfully none of my furniture would need to go into storage. Things would be tight, but temporary.
My due date was November 30, only a little over a month away and finally I was looking pregnant. Again, my poor mom. She drove back over to help me finish packing, so Milos could study, and then she would join us in San Diego to help us get settled.
Another good thing about the sale was that I could repay her. When my father had passed away, there was a decent amount of life insurance money. My mom had generously made the down payment, getting me out of the apartment life that had been my digs for the past ten years.
The rental office in San Diego for our new housing was only open until a certain time, so once the moving truck was loaded, Milos and Lui booked it down, leaving my mother and I to lock up and hide the keys for Maya.
It was weird, standing in the living room with everything gone.
The house echoed, sad as well from our parting. My chest throbbed. It felt wrong, I didn’t want to be leaving, not like this. My life wasn’t about me or what I wanted anymore. As a parent, you have to make sacrifices.
Tears were shed as I drove down to my new life. Thankfully, my mom had to operate her own vehicle, so she wouldn’t have to witness me grieving. I let them flow freely down my face, washing away my past and getting myself ready for the next chapter.
The following few weeks were spent unpacking and making lists of things that we needed to get, sorting objects into piles to donate. I wasn’t even close to having all the recommended items for a newborn, but God Bless Amazon.
Milos was barely sleeping, up until the wee hours of the morning studying. He pushed his USMLE Step One test for the very last time to December 30, wanting to go through his Pathology book that he already knew by heart. He was ready and I just wanted him to take the test for crying out loud, but I also tried to understand things from his point of view.
Higher test scores meant a better residency, which meant a happier Milos.
Feisty Maya threw me a baby shower, which we drove back up to LA to attend. It was simple but beautiful, most of the food being homemade and with my closest friends all in one place at the same time. We laughed, we played cliché party games, and we went home feeling extremely loved and spoiled, especially with the thoughtful gifts they had bestowed on us.
