1 This statement supports the view that flying is not an intellectual pursuit. Rather it is a craft that requires various competencies and skills, like the ability to perform complex mathematical calculations while flying an aircraft.

2 In the UK in December, 2004, the average price of a residential property was over £152,000.

3 Some argue that the LCC model can be applied to both short-haul and long-haul operations. New York-based LCC jetBlue operates some very long trans-continental sectors. One of its services connects New York on the Atlantic coast with Long Beach on the Pacific coast. Nicholls (2006, p. 30) comments: ‘JetBlue’s route map clearly shows it has expanded well beyond its initial territory in the eastern USA’. Ionides (2006, p. 46) notes: ‘The concept of medium/long-haul low-cost travel may still be ahead of its time, but a number of Asian carriers are willing to give it a try’.

4 Some predict the advent of exclusive ‘business only’ widebody services across the North Atlantic, the continued expansion of tailored (but expensive) corporate flying and the development of supersonic business jets.
