Libby – seconds later
Panicked, Libby smacked herself on the forehead. “Libby, you idiot,” she scolded. “He thinks you’re engaged! You can’t just… Aaugh!”
But she couldn’t deny a budding attraction. If the whole Tobias mess had never happened and she’d seen Reg at the grocery store, she’d definitely have bumped into his cart “by accident” just for an excuse to look up into that handsome face with the warm, dark eyes and gentle, lop-sided smile.
In jeans and an old college sweatshirt, at least she wouldn’t look like she was flirting. She couldn’t flirt. Absolutely not.
Libby chewed her lip. She’d said she had something for him, but what? Pineapple upside down cake stood on the counter, baked yesterday. She hurried and cut him a large slice, wrapping it onto a paper plate. It was just a thank you. That’s all. He’d worked so hard. It was like a tip.
She repeated this to herself all the way to the park until she saw his green truck idling near the main entrance.
Who was she kidding? She was nothing to him but a rich client. With a sigh, she got out of her car.
“Hey, Reg!” she called out. “What a happy coincidence that we both live nearby.” She leaned an elbow through the open window on the driver’s door. “I got you something to go with the ice cream.” She passed him the plate, trying not to watch too closely as his face transformed with delighted surprise.
“Oh my gosh, did you make this? You didn’t have to do that!”
“I know, but you went out of your way to make the reception so nice, and I thought…” She shrugged, drinking in the sparkle of his eyes, the strength of his shoulders, the shyness of his smile.
“That’s really nice of you.” His voice was husky and warm, like the setting sun.
“It’s a simple thing,” she said, stuffing her hands in her jeans pockets and backing away a step.
He held it to his nose, sniffing the pineapple topping. “It’s the simple things that matter most.” His eyes connected with hers over the slice of cake, and Libby knew she was melting faster than his ice cream.
