When I work through the five-year blocks of my life, my grandmother takes an important place in my list of influential people. She seemed to love me fiercely. If I had not given my life to God, I think she would have done it for me.

Grandmother was the first serious pray-er in my life. Since my grandfather was a missionary leader with his face pointed toward Europe, Grandma insisted that I learn the map of Europe—its rivers, its great cities, its people groups, and its rich history. She unashamedly bribed me to memorize all the European nations, promising two brand-new dollar bills (no small amount of money then) when I could repeat their names with no mistakes. Memorizing Ephesians 6 was worth a pencil sharpener—something I’d long coveted.

There are many other key persons I could place in the five-year blocks of life. Not all of them were particularly good people. There are those who are remembered because they brought pain, hurt, or humiliation. These have to be included among the key people also. And when we meet someone in our adult years that reminds us of them,we struggle with strange feelings of dislike or fear or anger. And that’s one of those times when repairing the past becomes so significant.
