GRANT SHIFTED IN HIS seat. He didn’t want to hurt her feelings. “I guess I don’t understand how someone who has gone through one of the most difficult things a person can face is able to just move forward.’

She frowned. “You make it sound like I bounced back the day after the funeral. I assure you, that wasn’t the case. Working through grief takes a lot of time. I’m still dealing with it. And yes, I have moments where I’m gripped with fear thinking about the grief that is to come. But now instead of giving in to that fear, I hug my parents and my sisters and my loved ones even more tightly. I make sure that they know how I feel about them and how much I love them. So that someday if that grief comes, I will have the peace of knowing that they knew how I felt, that I had done everything possible to show them and to love them. And then I’ll go through that grieving process, but I’ll do it carrying a lifetime of memories to see me through.”

Grant had to hide his smile. Brooke’s passionate speech had brought a pretty color to her cheeks. He was finding more and more that he enjoyed hearing her insights on things and he often found himself thinking of things she’d said even days later. “Can we agree to disagree? I admire that you’ve coped with things so well. Maybe it’s because you have a great support system around you. Or maybe it’s that your faith is strong, and you lean on the Lord.” He shrugged. “I imagine it’s a combination of both. But for me it isn’t that simple. I decided a long time ago that the best way to protect myself from being in such a dark place again is to be a loner. I know it doesn’t make a lot of sense to someone like you, but it works for me.”

She frowned. “Bad things are going to happen. Whether you’re a loner or not. But if you allow yourself to form close bonds with others, they will help you through those dark times.”

“Hi, you two.”

Grant looked up to see Kate and Drew Harrison standing by their table.

“We had a hankering for onion rings and shakes,” Drew explained. “You know how it is.”

Kate leaned down to talk to River, then glanced at Brooke. “Can you believe that the summer has almost gone? I’m already getting all my vendors lined up for the Arcadia Valley Holiday Market.”

Although the regular farmers market ended in mid-October, a special holiday market started up on weekends in November and December where vendors sold holiday-themed items. Brooke had sold cute chicken Christmas ornaments last year, and Riley always offered Christmasy dog and cat treats plus other stocking stuffers for the family pet. “I know. It’s nearly September and yet in my heart I feel like we just celebrated Memorial Day.” Brooke grinned.

“Can I count on you to take part in the Holiday Market?” Kate asked.
