The Balfour Declaration of 1917 and the eventual reestablishment of the modern state of Israel in 1948 are not direct fulfillments of the prophesied return to the land. They are 2454 years too late. Israel did return to her land after the decree of the king of Persia in 539–538 BC. Moreover, most orthodox rabbis reject twentieth-century political events as in any way fulfilling prophecy. By and large, secular Jews (mainly agnostics and atheists) reformed the modern state of Israel. This is not to say that the Lord may not have special plans for Israel or for any other nation—but this is difficult to prove from Scripture. Thus those who see current Middle Eastern events in the Scriptures, or who predict doomsday in connection with events in the Arab world, are on shaky ground.
