A pale, wintry sun made its way into the eastern sky on Saturday, November 21, 1840, just as a lusty cry reverberated through the upper halls of Buckingham Palace. Dr. Cecil Rice, with the aid of nurse Jean Miller, brought Princess Victoria Adelaide Mary Louise into the world.

A jubilant husband entered the bedroom when called by Jean, and looked at his beautiful baby daughter with tears in his eyes. The parents had agreed that since the baby’s first name was Victoria, they would call her Vicky.

Albert and Victoria were thrilled with their new daughter, and Mary was thrilled with her new granddaughter. Louise announced that she would be “Aunt Louise” to little Vicky, and after Mary had held the baby for a lengthy time, she took the infant into her arms, kissed her chubby cheek, and said, “Hello, sweetheart. I’m your Aunt Louise, and I love you.”

Lucy Granville had her moment of joy when she was allowed to hold the baby and announce to her that she was her governess, and that she also loved her.

As the days passed, Albert and Victoria often sat for long periods of time, just watching little Vicky sleep.

When the baby was a month old, the family’s pastor was invited to Buckingham Palace, and before all the guards and servants, she was dedicated back to the Lord as the pastor held her in his arms. He prayed that the Lord would bring Vicky to Himself when she was old enough to understand her need of the Saviour, thanked Him that she was safe until then, and prayed that He would guide her life and use her for His glory.
