Model hopeful self-talk

Let children and young people see the adults around them also using hopeful self-talk! Change your ‘I can’t play chess’ to ‘I haven’t learned how to play chess yet.’

Model ‘I wonder…’ rather than ‘I hope…’

This is a simple trick which can help to make uncertainty more comfortable (Burkeman 2017). Saying ‘I hope…’ (e.g. ‘I hope I get on the school football team’) defines only one outcome as acceptable. Using ‘I wonder…’ (e.g. ‘I wonder if I will get on the school football team this year’ or ‘I wonder which extracurricular activities I will enjoy this year’) is more open-ended and keeps you more receptive to new possibilities. Model this way of talking in your own speech and support this way of thinking in your students too.
