6.2.1.3. The new start according to Luke

In canonical order, the Gospel According to Luke, following Mark and Matthew, is the last of the gospels to be written. Like Matthew, Luke also incorporates the 600 or so verses from Mark’s gospel into his gospel. In addition, he incorporates the approximately 200 verses of Jesus’ teachings which Matthew includes, but which are not found in Mark’s gospel. Finally, Luke has additional information which is exclusive to his own gospel. The implication of this interrelatedness between the gospels is that in terms of message there is one gospel; but in terms of form, there are many gospels, each of which has unique emphases. As a reminder, one of Mark’s distinctive titular themes is that Jesus is the Son of Man (see above discussion), and one of Matthew’s distinctive titular themes is that Jesus is the Son of David (see above). Similarly, Luke’s Jesus as the Son of God title contributes to the distinctive character of his gospel.
