Fourth-grade teacher Kate Lapetino brings kindness into her classroom each and every day. With a year-long focus on kindness woven into thirteen separate initiatives, her passion for kindness knows no bounds!

Kate began a Weekly Kindness Challenge in her school to see if fourth graders could spread their kindness beyond the walls of Eugene Field Elementary School in Wheeling, Illinois. Each week students were provided a new act of kindness to perform such as donating items or giving a stranger a compliment. By the end of the school year, the fourth graders in her school had completed more than thirty-four hundred random acts of kindness!

In addition to the Weekly Kindness Challenge, students also participated in World Kindness Day (November 13), Random Acts of Kindness Day (February 17), and aligned kindness activities with other holidays throughout the year. They created kindness videos, designed encouraging notes to place on middle school students’ lockers, played games with senior citizens, packed individual care bags for a local shelter, and distributed more than seven hundred compostable seed papers for others to plant in celebration of Earth Day.

Their initiatives have scattered globally, thanks to social media. Using the hashtag #FieldKindness, they have shared more than two hundred posts documenting their kindness journey, many of which have been liked or shared by other kindness cultivators around the world. They even experienced several pay-it-forward moments, with Leon Logothetis (The Kindness Diaries) donating one hundred books for one hundred postcards created, and Michael’s stores donating more than one hundred hospital gowns valued at twenty-five dollars each for every student-designed hospital gown submitted to their My Starlight Gown contest.

Kate’s advice for cultivating kindness is simple. “Don’t let it become a ‘one-and-done’ project. Truly make a change in mindset and habits by spreading kindness and talking about kindness often.”
