Something was different about her.

Seth couldn’t put his finger on it, but Miriam seemed more lighthearted the next morning when he picked her up. When he opened the buggy door, she almost smiled at him. He wanted to ask her what was making her happy, but they hadn’t gotten to that point in their relationship yet, where he felt he could pry.

Relationship. When had he started thinking about Miriam in terms of a relationship? He couldn’t pinpoint the exact moment, but he took her agreement to let him take her to work as a sign that he was making some headway. Right now he would be happy to move past acquaintance to friendship.

And maybe something more.

She didn’t say anything until they were well on their way to Paradise. They had just passed a large field of grazing black-and-white dairy cows when she said, “Tell me about your accident.”

Seth’s hands tightened on the reins. It was an inevitable question; he just hadn’t expected her to ask it so soon. Or so bluntly.

“Not much to tell. I got drunk, got in my car, and hit a tree.”

“Why?”

He turned and looked at her. “What do you mean, why?”

“Why would you do something like that?”

“I didn’t do it on purpose,” he said, flustered.

“Somebody forced you to drink and then made you drive?”

“Nee!” He pulled on Gravy’s reins, slowing the horse down. The road was clear of cars, so he took the opportunity to face Miriam.

She glanced down at her hands, her glasses slipping down her nose a bit. “I didn’t mean to make you mad. You said yesterday that you were different. I just wanted to know how that happened.”

He blinked. She’d never expressed an interest in knowing anything about him before. But why did she have to ask about that? Because he knew that he couldn’t sidestep the truth. Not with her.

Seth swiveled around and faced the road, but he kept Gravy moving at a slow pace. Let the Englisch drivers honk their horns. He didn’t care. They hogged the road anyway.

“After I finished school, I went to work with my daed. That didn’t last very long. We fought all the time, mostly about stupid stuff. I see now that I wasn’t doing my share, but at the time I thought he was being too critical, too harsh. At the same time I’d made a few Englisch friends from the local high school. They invited me to their parties, and I brought them to some of ours.” He glanced at her. “I’m not talking about the frolics and singings. I’m talking about the drinking parties.”

“I know. I never went to those parties, but I knew a few girls that did.”

“I’m glad you didn’t go. Because if you had been there, you would have likely seen me. And it would be hard to look you in the eye right now if you had. I’m not proud of the way I was back then. But at the time I thought I was living the life. Finally my daed got fed up with me and fired me, with gut reason.
