MEDITATION BODY POSITIONS

You can meditate in any position. The most commonly used position is one where you sit cross-legged. This is a derivative of the lotus pose in yoga. The idea of sitting cross-legged or in the lotus position is that you are keeping your energy in a closed circuit by having your legs touch each other. That means none of your energy or vital life force can leak away. In this position, people often place their hands in their laps in various positions. One common hand placement is to have both hands faceup, lay one on top of the other, and then join the two thumbs gently above that, forming a circle. This, too, is intended to create a closed circuit for the energy of your body. This helps keep your energy internal instead of having it go out of your body and interact with the world around you, because meditation is a process of going within.

You can also meditate during your yoga practice in various body positions. People also do moving meditations, which place the body in all kinds of interesting positions. We will learn about those later in the book.

It is also equally effective to meditate lying down. You can do this on a yoga mat with a cushion under your knees and a pillow under your head. You can even meditate in bed.
