The next day, after church, where the boys had misbehaved and crawled all over her, Lindsey dropped by the cottage to let them run around the backyard while she freshened up. She tried to think about what she’d learned during the service and not how she was certain Donovan had almost kissed her in the cottage yesterday. She needed to deal with it and be firm, but a part of her wasn’t sure she wanted to say anything. Reminding herself about the inn’s state of affairs, she loaded the twins back into the van with excited cries of Emiwee! and they all looked forward to lunch at the Ainsworths’. Claire had babysat the boys several times, and they loved their playtime with Emily in the spacious house. Toys were allowed everywhere. Emily had a cat named Pony, and Leo chanted the strange moniker all the way to their house. The Ainsworths’ semi-Victorian home was a lovely shade of vanilla pudding with a dark purple door. Lindsey unbuckled the boys and set them free just as the front door opened and Bradley waved. Emily dashed past his leg to meet the boys on the wide porch steps.

“Leo! Archer!” she cried, clapping her hands. They scurried inside to play. “Welcome,” said Bradley cheerfully.

“Thank you for having me for lunch,” Lindsey called.

“Thank you for coming.” He smiled.

She breezed through the beautiful entry and stepped into the parlor, sucking in a breath when she saw Donovan with an arm thrown casually across the back of a gray couch. He sat facing the television, which had a baseball game on. His head snapped her direction when she reached the edge of the plush area rug centered in the room.

“Hey there,” he said cheerfully, “you made it.”

“You heard the boys, I’m sure.”

He laughed and motioned for her to take a seat beside him. “Yes, Emily was watching out the window for you.” Claire burst out from the kitchen with bowls of chips and pretzels in her hands.

Lindsey eyed the food spread across the low glass coffee table in front of the television. “This looks amazing.”

“Oh, it’s no big deal. Just some mini sausages, nachos, pizza bites and fruit salad. But I promise you, there is a veggie plate, too,” Claire giggled. “Help yourself.”

Bradley came in with drinks, and they all settled down to watch the baseball game and eat. It felt like she’d known them forever, Lindsey thought. She forced the events of the previous day to the back of her mind while Donovan gave her a rundown on the statistics of the team. “I don’t follow sports much,” she admitted.

Donovan promised she’d change her mind if she lived in Kudzu Creek long enough. Lindsay laughed. “Maybe. Plus I do want to put the boys in T-ball next year.”

“It’s never too early,” said Bradley, and his wife rolled her eyes.

“I think I’ll just be happy with this delicious dip for now,” said Lindsey. “Does it have dill in it?”

“It does,” Claire admitted. “There’s pie, too, for later.
