QUEEN ELIZABETH 2, PAINTING BY PHILIPPE CONRAD

GREAT BRITAIN, 1969

If ever there was an iconic liner, QE2 has to be a strong contender. Launched at John Brown and Co. on Clydebank on 20 September 1967, she was to sail for Cunard until November 2008, travelling 5.5 million miles in her long career, the longest of any Cunarder.

As designed in 1965, she was to replace the two original Queens but also bridge the gap between a transatlantic liner and cruise ship, to enable that flexibility to make her viable in what was now the jet age. At 68,863 GRT and 963 × 105ft, she was smaller than Mary and Elizabeth, but these liners were now losing huge amounts of money for Cunard and transatlantic passenger traffic had dropped from 1 million to 650,000 passengers between 1957 and 1965. The new Queen would be make or break for Cunard.
