There was an ounce of truth in this stereotype, but also a pound of lies. Jesus was quite simply pro-human. He didn’t hate institutions or authority, cities or business, but he knew that to be effective, these things must serve the human person.
Oddly, in many ways Jesus reveals a businessman’s personality. He often reasoned in terms of costs and benefits, investments and yield. He expected his disciples to bear fruit, and looked for a return on the talents he bestowed. He was not some pie-eyed idealist, but a firmly grounded realist.
