Chapter Nine

God had a reason for everything. Jessie truly believed that—at least, that was what she told herself as she stood outside Creek Cabin at six o’clock the next morning.

It was dark out, the spring sun still snoozing, and only a few lavender tendrils of light unfurled along the mountain range in the distance. A lone bird chirped from the depths of a thick Cypress tree and a chilly breeze rustled through thick branches and swept across the clearing, coaxing goose bumps along Jessie’s bare arms.

Jessie tugged the short sleeves of her T-shirt down a bit, shoved her hands into the pockets of her jeans and bounced in place. “Shoulda brought a jacket,” she mumbled to herself as she eyed the front door of Creek Cabin.

She should’ve brought a lot of things and left others behind. Take her pride, for instance. She could’ve left that at home in favor of a light windbreaker. It would’ve made this endeavor a whole lot less painful. But then again, in her experience, eating crow was never a very pleasant experience under any circumstances.

And maybe that’s the problem, a little voice chimed inside her head.

She made a face. Perhaps it was. Maybe her conscience had a point. Maybe apologizing to Holt for her emotional outburst last night and taking the first step to openly invite him into her and the boys’ lives only seemed like an insurmountable task because the act itself proved one thing above all: she had been pushing him away as a result of her own fears and insecurities—unfairly, as he’d suggested—despite offering to help him reconnect with Cody and Devin. And she’d allowed it to all spill out in a tearful tirade last night.

A light flickered on above the tiny window of the cabin’s kitchen. Holt, clad in a short-sleeved T-shirt and jeans, ambled into view and stretched one muscular arm upward to the left of the window.

He was probably rooting around in one of the cabinets for a mug. Jessie lifted her shoulders toward her ears and stamped her feet, fighting off the early-morning chill. A hot cup of coffee would be more than welcome right about now and clearly, Holt was up and about now, which left her no more excuses as to why she should delay the inevitable.

Oh, buck up, girl, that annoying voice chimed. You promised him last night that you’d try. So apologize and...try.

Sighing, she squared her shoulders, marched up to the front door and knocked twice.

The door opened a moment later and Holt, surprise in his eyes, surveyed her silently for a moment then stepped back and swept his arm toward the interior of the cabin. “Please, come in.”

She did so, saying as she stepped across the threshold, “Thank you. I hate to bother you so early but...” She glanced around, eyes flicking nervously over the familiar features of the living room. “Um, Zoe and the boys are fixing a big breakfast at her cabin and we wanted to invite you over to eat with the boys and see them off to school this morning.
