Hitler Youth bronze sports award pin. Deutsches Jungvolk Leistungsabzeichen (German Young Person’s Performance Badge). This lapel pin is a small version of a much larger award. This, one of the author’s most cherished possessions, was given to him by his good friend Herb Schmitz, who was forced to part with most of the trophies he won at school in return for food from occupying GIs.

WWII German magnesium ‘Electron’ incendiary – the notoriously effective ‘Firebomb Fritz’. Designed to be dropped in large quantities over urban areas to create uncontrollable firestorms, they detonated on impact, igniting a magnesium compound that rapidly burned white-hot and was difficult to extinguish. Notorious for their habit of crashing through roof tiles and within consumable timber joists, not all of them detonated, however. ‘Duds’, often without their delicate aluminium tailfins, became sought-after schoolboy souvenirs. A ‘Firex’ (fire extinguishing grenade) is also shown. When thrown at the base of a fire the grenade smashed and the carbon-tetrachloride within inhibited combustion.
