HOW PARAEDUCATORS CAN BE CO-TEACHERS

A frequently asked question about paraeducators in the role of co-teachers is whether or not they can or should engage in all of the four co-teaching roles. To approach this question, take a moment to recall Ms. Hernandez, Ms. Bartolo, and Mr. Anderson. As we have tracked these paraeducators and their team members, you have learned a little about how each para-educator on the teams has served in various co-teaching roles.

For all four co-teaching approaches, it is possible for paraeducators to provide meaningful instruction. Our experience has been that if paraeducators are to engage in complementary or team teaching co-teaching roles, at the very least there must be time for planning, and paraeducators need to have the benefit of careful training and supervision. Issues of paraeducator training and supervision for co-teaching are critical ones, frequently discussed in the literature (Ashbaker & Morgan, 2005; French, 2002; Gerlach, 2006; Picket & Gerlach, 2003) and are further explored in Chapter 6.
