BOREDOM

THERE WAS A GUY in college with me who wanted to keep in touch after graduation. He was a pleasant and very smart young man, but he was so boring as to be a kind of genius at it. I’ll call him Boris. I swear that when Boris called me, the telephone ring itself was boring. I could tell it was Boris calling and would begin to nod off in the middle of saying hello. He was boring because he always, but always, saw every side of every topic and wanted to discuss all of those sides. For example: The chorus of a song called “If You Wanna Be Happy,” sung by Jimmy Soul in the early sixties (you may know it; it has grown a few pop culture legs), provided Boris with one of his most richly boring disquisitions. Here it is:

If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life,

Never make a pretty woman your wife.

So from my personal point of view,

Get an ugly girl to marry you.
