The title “impromptu” has no special musical meaning, joining the group of meaningless names thought up by the nineteenth-century Romantics to identify their music. This one joins the ranks of such fanciful labels as “rhapsody,” “album leaf,” “intermezzo,” “fantasy,” “nocturne,” and so on. Schubert’s lovely Impromptu—tender and straightforward—needs nothing more than a simple performance, without exaggerated rhythm or dynamics.
