Nesting and Mating Behaviors
The Yellow-billed Cuckoo arrives in its breeding territory in early June and builds a frail, platform-type nest of sticks occasionally sparsely lined with grasses and leaves. The male usually brings materials to the site, but the female arranges them to her own specifications. Two to four pale, greenish-blue, unmarked eggs can sometimes be seen through the bottom of the nest, and because the saucer is so shallow, some occasionally tumble to the ground.
The female does most of the incubation, and because she lays the eggs at intervals, some hatch before others. The male begins feeding the early arrivals while the female finishes brooding the remaining eggs.
