Chapter Nine

For a moment Leigh didn’t get it. Then she realized what he meant, and happiness flooded through her. Daniel had changed his mind, had decided to put his daughter first, and she hadn’t done a thing.

“You’re coming on the picnic? That’s wonderful, Daniel.”

He shrugged, his eyes fixed on Sarah as she went up the steps ahead of them. “Getting over her fear of the dark is something to celebrate. Besides, I haven’t had a toasted marshmallow in a long time. We are having marshmallows, aren’t we?”

“Couldn’t have a campfire without them.” Leigh scribbled a mental note to run to the store. Eating toasted marshmallows was a small price to pay for the major stride Daniel seemed to have made in his understanding of Sarah.

Daniel lifted an eyebrow. “And hotdogs?”

“And hotdogs.” She stopped on the stairs, looking up at him. “I knew that kitten was a good idea. I just didn’t realize how good.”

He smiled slowly, the fine sun lines at the corners of his dark eyes crinkling. “You think I needed to be locked in the shed all alone.”

“I think…” Her throat had gone dry. “I think it didn’t hurt you any.”

He laughed and turned to open the door. She could breathe again.

Daniel had made progress. Maybe that suggestion of Joe’s wasn’t so impossible after all. Maybe, if she brought it up at the right time, in the right way, Daniel would be willing to listen with an open mind.

If she took Sarah to the summer program at Mark and Meggie’s school…Her mind wanted to back away from that thought. If she did, Sarah wouldn’t be the only one going into a difficult situation. The experience had just as much potential to wound Leigh as it did Sarah.

She bit her lip. She couldn’t refuse to do something that might make all the difference for Sarah and Daniel just because it would hurt her. She’d find a chance to bring it up tonight.

Tonight, when they were alone on the beach. That insidious warmth rippled through her again. Daniel was coming. She’d gotten what she wanted. Now she had to figure out how to deal with it.
