Chapter Six

“Ashe? You ready to go?”

Jarrett’s voice calling from the living room startled Ashley. He was home, ready to take her to the office.

“Coming,” she called, and gave her outfit one last adjustment. She wasn’t sure what she dreaded most—crossing the hurdles that awaited at Jarrett’s office or just facing him again.

This morning, after clumsily fleeing the kitchen, she had remained in her bedroom while he left for early rounds at the hospital and appointments at the office. He had called before noon, to tell her everything was set with her job and he was coming to pick her up. That’s when nerves had hit her in earnest.

She had spent the past half hour trying on the clothes she had brought with her, finally settling on a kelly green knit dress, a navy jacket and a brightly colored scarf. The outfit was an amalgamation of clothes given to her by Paige and Kathryn. Nothing, save the scarf, seemed to suit her.

But they were all she had, so she took a deep breath and went out to greet Jarrett. His conservative gray suit was every bit as appealing as the boxers she had caught him in this morning. The memory made her flush.

He was at ease, apparently unaffected by their early-morning, half-dressed encounter. Hopefully, he had been too sleepy to notice what a gauche idiot she had made of herself. His dark eyes warmed with appreciation as they scanned her from head to toe. “You look terrific.”

“Do I?” She brushed an uncertain hand through her hair. She was happy with the new style Kathryn’s hairdresser had given her last week. That, at least, felt like her own choice.

Jarrett gestured toward the door. “Come on. Greta’s excited to meet you.”

Once they were in the car and headed toward his office, Ashley quizzed him about the people she was going to meet. “Greta’s the office manager, right?”

Busy merging into traffic, Jarrett nodded. “I think of her as the office lieutenant. She keeps things running like a top.”

“She sounds very efficient.”

He shot her an encouraging smile. “She’s also one of the kindest, sweetest people I’ve ever known. She lives here in Las Colinas, not far from my place, and she’ll be giving you a ride most mornings, since I’m usually at the hospital long before it’s time for you to be at the office.”

Ashley bit her lip. “I hate to put her out like that.”

“She suggested it.”

The city scenery flashed by the window for a few minutes before Ashley spoke. “Did you tell Greta all about me?”

“Your memory?”

“And the baby.”

“I thought I should.” His eyebrows drew together as he glanced at her. “Is that okay with you?”

“Of course.”

“She thought your memory loss was something we shouldn’t make a big deal about around the office. Gossip, you know. People can blow it all out of proportion.”

That made Ashley chuckle. “Good Lord, how much bigger can it get than total amnesia?”

He laughed, as well. “You’re right, I guess. But I didn’t think you’d want to be answering all kinds of questions.
