Bangor was familiar with the concept of having too much of a good thing—after all, he had seen Uncle York eat before. But here he was, a full week into his time in Perkins Cove, and things were only getting better. Every night, he told himself this would be his last night in Ogunquit, and that when the sun rose the next morning, he would say good-bye and head back out to find his family. But when each morning rolled around, something happened to remind him how exciting this new place was: a new batch of visitors or a gift from Lars, like the morning he’d come to the beach with a little furry green ball he’d found for the two of them to push back and forth across the water. And each morning, the water got a little bit warmer, which was a very strange experience for a northern porpoise like Bangor, but certainly a new and exciting one.

And now there was this strange little human in his oddly large and brightly colored outfit, who giggled and grabbed at Bangor’s fin with fingers too small and chubby to actually hurt. The humans really never cease to produce new wonders, Bangor marveled.

But none of the humans, even this small and very cute one, had anything on Natalie. She never yelled too loud, or played too rough, and she clearly had a lot of love for both Bangor and Lars.

But then, who wouldn’t love Lars? For Bangor, Lars was maybe the best part of this all. Humans came and went—even Natalie had days where she was too busy doing human things to make it out to the beach. But Lars was there every day, as loyal as he was playful. And while he certainly enjoyed it when Bangor did tricks or flips, he didn’t seem to need to be entertained. The two of them could just swim alongside each other quietly, enjoying each other’s company, and that counted as playing. To Bangor, it felt deeper than a friendship; it felt like they were family. It felt like he’d found a new pod.

You already have a pod, said a voice in the back of Bangor’s brain. And it was true.

But porpoises leave and find new pods all the time, Bangor thought back. And that was true, too.

But something porpoises did not do all the time was start new pods with strange creatures who lived on the land. It just didn’t seem like good long-term planning. Right now, for example, Natalie and Lars were making their way out of the water, taking their small friend with them, and Bangor was reminded that no matter how close they grew, his new friends would go and leave him all alone every night. Every night he told himself they’d come back, and so far, every night he’d been right.

But how long could this last? What if one night they just left and never came back?

Like Bangor had done to his own family.

This was all stressful to think about.
