Family Vacations

We didn’t just travel for outreach. We started going on vacation every year after purchasing a time-share. It happened when we attended one of those meetings where you get a free this or that for coming to listen to the sales pitch. Ben figured with his workaholic mind-set it would probably be a good investment, because it would force us to actually take time off and have good quality time as a family. With the time-share exchange system it was even better, because we ended up going to Disneyland one year, Disney World several times, and to places as far away as Málaga, Spain, pairing it with a tour of Europe on the train. When we spent time in Utah, Ben and the boys enjoyed climbing the rocks for hours at the statuesque Bryce Canyon National Park, with the gorgeous Natural Bridge. The elegant natural beauty of Zion National Park wasn’t lost on us either. It’s one of Ben’s favorite places in America. Some of his photographs of Zion we had enlarged to hang in his office at work to bring back those fond memories.

We once stayed in a suburban town near the Utah parks where there was an arcade for kids of all ages. And the arcade owner was so touched to see a black family with mannerly children that he gave the boys each a handful of tokens! So as Ben says in his talks, there are some advantages to being black in Utah!

On this particular vacation, we had gone to several national parks with fabulous views and rock formations. As we traveled one night, it had become quite dark as we were descending a steep mountain. Although the road hugged the mountainside, the edge where we were had a sheer drop, so Ben was taking extra care not to go over.

Suddenly out of the darkness a car passed us at what seemed to be close to 100 miles per hour! We were all rather weary from a long day, so Ben reasoned, “I can just follow this guy down the mountain—at a respectable distance of course—with just enough space to stop if his lights disappear over the side.” (Fortunately, he didn’t voice this reasoning out loud or he might have been outvoted!) So we zoomed along the curvy mountain road. I was quite awake by this time, peering into the darkness in case I could help in some way. All of a sudden, a huge cougar jumped in front of the headlights! He must have been coming down the trail at a rapid pace too, for he acrobatically attempted to avoid colliding with either car as well as to maintain his balance on the slightly sloped road next to the extremely steep mountainside. His agility was quite remarkable! I scrambled for my camera in hopes of capturing this true Kodak moment, but alas the big cat finally gained his balance and dashed off into the darkness of the night before I could take aim.
