Nothing is known of Shakespeare between the birth of his twins in 1585 and Robert Greene's reference to him in London in 1592. There are many legends such as John Aubrey's report that he was ‘a schoolmaster in the country’, and there has been much speculation. Considering how much he had written by 1598, it seems likely that he began to write some years before 1592.
