Notes

1From mṛta, without life, and aṇḍa, an egg.

2This indicates alternating death and regeneration (RV., X.72,8-9). The eighth Āditya is ‘the only one by whom continuity of the cosmic process is secured; at the same time he is the remainder, which can be dangerous… and is thrown away to be reproduced, that is, to become the principle of continuity’ (Heesterman, Ancient Indian Royal Consecration, p. 36, n.26).

Marula One of the five ascetics traditionally regarded as the founders of the Vīra-Śaiva sect, the others being Ekorāma, Paṇḍitārādhya, Revaṇa and Viśvārādhya. They are said to have sprung from the five heads of Śiva, and to become incarnate in each age.1
