Another great default behavior that you will want to cultivate is “checking in.” This means that your dog gives a glance back at you. In order for this to become routine and a habit you will want to make it extra reinforcing for your dog. So, be prepared! Have a treat pouch on you with yummy (in your dog’s eyes!) bits of something worthwhile and every time your dog looks at you “pay” him for that behavior by giving him a treat! Again, the more that you practice this consistently, the more often your dog will check in. The more behavior is repeated, the stronger it becomes, which is exactly what you are going for!
