With their vivid yellow, orange, and red heads and their dramatic white and black feathers, king vultures are the most colorful of their kind. They don’t have eyelashes, like other vultures do, but they do have a stunning red ring around each eye.

These vultures are gigantic birds! Their wingspan can measure almost 6.5 feet (2 m) and they can grow to 2.5 feet (80 cm) from head to tail. They usually weigh up to 10 pounds (4.5 kg).

The king vulture is a sexually monomorphic bird, which means both sexes look the same. Like other vultures, they’re bald, a trait that evolved to prevent them from getting diseases after feasting on dead animals.
